MAC recently launched their Retro Matte Liquid Lipsticks in India. They’ve launched quite a few shades which include nudes, reds, pinks and corals. In total, I believe there are 15 shades. I got two of them- Fashion Legacy (a bright red) and Personal Statement (a statement pink). So I asked you guys on my Instagram if you wanted to see a detailed review on them and and many of you did, so here is my review on the first one.
Price: Rs 1800/ USD 20 for 5ml
The Retro Matte Liquid Lipsticks come with a top packaging similar to the regular MAC lipsticks but have a different, transparent plastic bottom. I actually quite like the packaging because it makes it super easy to locate the shades when you have more than one of these. The packaging is sturdy and the lid screws tightly making it leak-proof as well. These lipsticks come with a flocked applicator that tapers at the tip. The tapered tip makes it really easy to apply the product with precision without the help of a lip brush.
The lipsticks have a slightly thick mousse-like consistency and are highly pigmented. If you sniff the wand closely, you can smell MAC’s signature faint vanilla fragrance but on the lips you can hardly detect it. They set into a matte finish pretty fast so if you need to correct something, you need to do it quick.
MAC describes this shade as an ‘intense fire-truck red’. It is a medium red with a warm undertone. On the initial application, it has an intense shine which settles into a completely matte finish within a minute. The shade should be flattering on light to medium skintones, especially on those with a warm undertone. For darker complexions, it may or may not suit you so its best to try it out before purchasing. Personally for me, this is a very flattering red. And the only true red in MAC’s collection of red lipsticks that I feel suits me. I absolutely love it!
Texture-wise, the lipstick goes on evenly and is extremely pigmented. It covers any pigmentation on the lips really well. As the day goes on, it can feel slightly drying on the lips and it helps if you have moisturized your lips with a hydrating lip balm the night before. With this shade, I did not experience any cracking, fading or bleeding. It stays on even through an entire meal and is definitely one of the longest lasting lipsticks in my collection. However, after a full meal, you do feel the need to re-apply the lipstick. Not because it looks faded or uneven. But because it can feel crumbly. Oh and it leaves an intense red stain behind and yes, you will need a strong makeup remover to get the stain off. Or you can use coconut oil too. That works just as well!
MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lipstick in Fashion Legacy is a warm red lipstick with an excellent pigmentation, great texture, amazing lasting power and a gorgeous shade. It can be drying on the lips so prior hydrating the lips is important. I wish MAC hadn’t upped their prices with this range but other than that, I absolutely love this lipstick and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a warm red lipstick!
